Web Log #5 – Tuesday, October 19th, 2021, 10:21 PM

Renegade is officially open for business in the EU and UK, though anyone who had made an account previously will need to make another one, to be able to place orders in their respective regions.

Also, any new UK customers wishing to procure PDFs may be sorely disappointed, as at the time of writing, aside from server errors, the Camarilla book PDF was still unavailable there, and not in any way, shape, or form included with the physical copy.

Hopefully, things will streamline over time, but Renegade have once again proven themselves ill-prepared, in spite of being given ample time, and as yet, the Sabbat book is delayed until November.

As yet, there is still no word on when Renegade will open up preorders for EU customers, such as myself, but they have announced that they will be releasing Hunter: The Reckoning's 5th Edition.

Bit odd, considering that it never had a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th edition, but they want to keep it consistent with Vampire and Werewolf, I guess.

At least, it's good that Hunter is finally getting some love.

Still, with that said, I would like it if they would make the first thing on their list available here, before starting on something new.

Renegade are, as of earlier today, offering free PDFs for preorders of the new Sabbat book, the Second Inquisition book and the Book of Nod reprint.

However, if you're in the EU or UK, you still have to wait until the EU end of things open up...

Whether it is a lack of forward-thinking on Renegade's part, or Paradox not impressing upon them how big of a market is in the EU... in the end, it feels like the EU playerbase is an afterthought; sure, it is nice that everyone in the US can get the PDFs to be able to use the books in play this month, as promised... but what about us? Why do we have to wait longer for the damned PDFs?!

They could literally go out at the same exact time!

As of yesterday, I've been able to get all of my PDF copies of the Vampire: The Masquerade 5E core books; they've gotten rid of the excessive watermarks, and all the PDFs now have bookmarks.

I had to send in my codes to Renegade, to have them fixed quicker, but it's resolved now.

They should soon be sorted entirely, so if you want your free copies again, it works.

The only issue now is people who got their books directly from Modiphius, since there were no codes in those.

Still, if you are a new customer, who didn't have any print copies with codes, I'd still recommend you buy the PDFs from DriveThruRPG, 'cause it'll be easier to access them, and you'll get messages about updates.

Web Log #1 – Friday, September 3rd, 2021, 03:59 AM

I've been following the developments around the new print versions of the Vampire: The Masquerade Fifth Edition books, and as someone who not only bought the original prints a couple of years ago, but also decided to spend quite a bit extra on the fancy, gray marble limited edition core book, I feel cheated, right alongside everyone else who bought the books.

Modiphius, the original company responsible for bringing the V5 books to print, back before Paradox brought the oversight back in-house to White Wolf, fucked up in a pretty big way.

And while the odd misprint eventually becomes valuable, it's quite another thing when all books are misprinted.

Now, for comparison, Evil Hat Productions fulfilled the physical copies of their Thirsty Sword Lesbians RPG books months ago, and it turned out that the printer had made a mistake.

The printer took responsibility for this, and Evil Hat were able to offer reprints in the same high quality to everyone, free of charge.

Modiphius, however, were the ones at fault for the V5 books being misprinted, not the printer. The onus was on them to pay for reprints, if they were going to offer them for free to everyone who wanted one, and so they didn't.

Instead, we got PDFs with the errata.

And, of course, we also got updates to the free PDF copies, the thing that Modiphius did do right, though those also had errors, like missing text and bookmarks.

This brings us to today, with Renegade.

They're selling the reprints, updated with all errata, including from the free Companion (though you still need the Companion for the info on playable mortals and ghouls, and the newly re-added Ravnos, Tzimisce and Salubri, and their powers), and book bands for keeping your place in the books, for about the same price as the old books, but given that they are no longer part of the Bits & Mortar program, they're charging physical book customers full price for PDFs (though at least they have come down a bit in price since initial release).

I have seen that if you bought the old Modiphius V5 books, you can at least use the codes in the back on Renegade’s site, to get the more up-to-date PDFs with errata included from them for free, though at the time of writing, only the code for the Core V5 book PDF works without issue, while the two sect books, Anarch and Camarilla, require assistance from customer support, as they request you to spend at least an additional $15.01 for the code to apply.

And it should be mentioned that the core PDF you get from their site has watermarks on every. Single. Page. Just a few at the start would've been enough.

And, no bookmarks either, so really, it’s not a very good deal in the end.

As such, until they change how it works, I recommend getting the PDFs from DriveThruRPG, if you're going to buy them at all, since they are apparently more up to date, easier to access, and if memory serves, should already have the bookmarks issue fixed (or at least be fixed soon). And if anything else turns out to be amiss with the files, it seems like that version will be updated first.

I'll include affiliate links to the core trilogy of PDFs below, 'cause yeah, I've got to eat.

I hope all this helps you make an informed decision on where to get your PDFs from.
